I have images where there are annotations. For example the whole image has an annotation to say FIG.1 which is written from South to North. Then for each part of the image, annotations are in numbers which are written South to North. Normal characters and not handwritten. I tried various options, it doesn't seem to work. Could it be made to work? Thanks for your help.

At the moment there is no automatic recognition of text with different orientation. As a workaround you can divide your image in a two parts and process them separately with either with processDocument or processImage methods.
