The XML output is one char per char data element. Example :

< charParams l="3287" t="722" r="3298" b="737" >O < /charParams >

Is there a way for the <block> and/or <text> element to have the overall string?

Unfortunately, the XML scheme which is implemented in the Cloud OCR SDK can only be expanded by setting the parameter xml:writeRecognitionVariants to true, so there is no opportunity to get the overall string in the result XML document.
